Happy New Year! Let's Catch Up.
This is 20 days late, but... Happy New Year!
Hope you've been enjoying 2017 so far, I thought now's a good time to catch up a bit.
This past month has been action-packed here in our little household. Grandparents from both sides of the family flew in from opposite corners of the world to spend the holiday season with us. Friends from near and far came over during the seemingly never-ending festivities. Celebrations of different cultural events took place. Meals of different world cuisines mashed together. We've been on the road quite a bit. Whew! I really haven't had much time to sit down to update Travel Chic Mom!
Here are a few snapshots of what we've been up to.
Well yes. There was definitely quite a lot of eating. With Christmas, New Year's, birthdays, and Epiphany, we had many reasons to celebrate. However, with a large household this past month, I've been honing my skills at entertaining on a budget. Two key points: DIY and foraging. That big, fat, juicy Dungeness crab? Thanks to Travel Chic Dad's (slowly) improving fishing skills. The classic French epiphany dessert "galette des rois" (King's Cake) that are sold way over-priced outside of France? I made it from scratch for the first time this year and couldn't believe how easy it was (I'll share the recipe with you soon).
We've also taken our families and friends on some short trips up and down the Northern Californian coast: fishing and beach-combing at Half Moon Bay, strolling by the pastel-colored houses in Capitola, watching surfers chasing waves into the sunset at Santa Cruz... who said beach towns were only for summers?
We also revisited some Bay Area classics: we drove around the winding hills of San Francisco, had clam chowder at Bourdin's, took pictures in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, visited some Silicon Valley icons, and made a day trip to Napa Valley. We discovered a family-friendly biodynamic winery in Sonoma that I'd love to tell you about soon.
We also took a long-anticipated couple's getaway weekend sans kids in Chicago! For a weekend, we were able to focus on us, have breakfast in bed, and let our inner kidults come out to play. We enjoyed our stay at a unique "athletic" hotel, learned about Chicago's history at a lovely museum, and I learned about how to dress for a -4°F/-20°C Chicagoan winter (a first for me)!
As you can see, there are many new posts coming your way!
